Privacy Policy

This privacy policy applies to the Jisho AI app ("the App") for iOS and Android. The iOS app is published on the App Store by Anastasiia Trofimova. The Android app is published on Google Play by Pavel Trofimov. In this policy, "we" means the publisher of the version you use. Contact for both: jisho_ai@proton.me.

The short version

• You don't need an account. We don't run ads, analytics or tracking, and we don't sell or share your data for advertising.
• Dictionary search, word and kanji details, history and text scanning work on your device. Your search history stays on your device.
• Only the cloud features (Premium AI and narration), Daily News and the optional WaniKani connection send data off your device, and only what each request needs.

What stays on your device

• Dictionary and search. The dictionary is bundled with the App. Searches, word details and your history are stored only on your device.
• Camera and photos. When you scan text, recognition runs on your device. Images are not uploaded.
• Settings and known kanji. Stored on your device.

What is sent off your device

• Premium AI features (AI tutor chat, reading practice, sense explanations, example generation). The text you write or select, and the conversation so far, is sent to our server, which passes it to AI model providers to generate the answer. A random app user ID is sent with the request so the server can check your subscription.
• Narration and pronunciation audio. The text to be spoken is sent to our server and a speech provider, which return the audio.
• Daily News. The App downloads articles from our server. Your device's IP address is visible to the server, as with any web request.
• Subscriptions. Purchases are handled by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We use RevenueCat to check whether your subscription is active. RevenueCat receives a random app user ID, your purchase history and basic device information (such as OS version and app version). We never see your payment details.
• WaniKani (optional). If you connect WaniKani, your personal access token is stored on your device and sent only to WaniKani's API (WaniKani privacy policy) to read your progress.

On iOS, the free on-device AI tutor uses Apple Intelligence and runs on your device; nothing is sent to us.

How we use this data

Only to provide the feature you asked for: answering your AI request, producing audio, delivering news and checking your subscription. We don't use it for advertising, profiling or to train AI models.

Service providers

Our server runs on Cloudflare. AI and speech requests are processed by AI model and speech providers on our behalf. Subscriptions are processed by Apple or Google and RevenueCat. These providers process data only to deliver the service.

Retention and deletion

We don't keep accounts or profiles. Request data on our server is kept only as long as needed to answer the request, keep the service secure and fix errors. Data on your device is removed when you delete your history in the App or uninstall it. To ask us to delete anything associated with your app user ID, write to jisho_ai@proton.me.

Security

All network traffic from the App uses encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Children

The App is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

We may update this policy. Changes are posted on this page with a new effective date.
